Asia Pacific and Middle East (APME) hyperscale data centre specialist, AirTrunk, has secured a A$4.25 billion green loan to fund the continued development of its SYD3 campus in Western Sydney. The project will add secure, resilient infrastructure for cloud, artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital services used by Australian businesses, governments and communities. The project is expected to support more than 10,000 jobs across construction, trades, engineering, logistics and safety. The facility is structured as a green loan with margin adjustments. Any contributions from the margin savings on the facility will be directed to AirTrunk’s social impact program to support local charities working across STEM education, digital equity, biodiversity and conservation, sustainable innovation and disaster relief. Growing Western Sydney’s workforce and supply chain SYD3 is creating project activity and opportunities for contractors and suppliers across Western Sydney and Australia, including in steel and precast manufacturing, freight and logistics, civil works, and electrical and mechanical services. AirTrunk’s broader supplier network reflects the scale of its activity across the region. In FY26, AirTrunk worked with 1,436 supplier entities across APAC, including 615 in Australia, which accounted for A$3.4 billion in supplier activity. For SYD3, AirTrunk is leveraging a 25,000 sqm strategic buffer zone in Western Sydney to store, stage and pre-commission critical data centre equipment, supporting just-in-time deliveries to campus. Moreover, AirTrunk’s investment in dedicated time-charter vessels further strengthens the supply chain into Port Botany, Port Kembla and beyond, creating a laser focused flow of equipment from country of origin to destination. Tom Mackellar, Vice President, Origination & Market Expansion said: “SYD3 is a long-term investment in Western Sydney and Australia’s digital capability, backed by the confidence of leading Australian and international banks. As the campus develops, it’s building a regional ecosystem through active hiring, sustained project activity and strategic supply chain partnerships – creating opportunities for local workers, contractors and businesses while delivering infrastructure Australians increasingly rely on. The green financing also reflects our view that sustainability should be built into how digital infrastructure is funded and delivered. We’re focused on responsible growth that creates lasting value for communities in the regions where we operate.” As SYD3 progresses, AirTrunk will continue to work with local contractors, suppliers and community partners while supporting the development of Australia’s digital infrastructure workforce through apprenticeships and technical skills development. AirTrunk is helping advance practical, outcomes-focused approaches to long-term workforce capability, including flexible apprenticeship pathways, partnerships with vocational education providers and post-trade upskilling through its participation in a national skills advisory group. Building Australia’s digital capacity responsibly SYD3 will add capacity for cloud, AI and enterprise services – the secure computing and storage infrastructure behind digital systems used every day across business, government, education and essential services. AirTrunk’s Australian platform spans five campuses, with more than 1.2GW of capacity. The company has invested over A$12 billion across its Australian projects to date and plans to invest a further A$75 billion over the next decade. This deal brings AirTrunk’s total committed debt financing to ~A$38.4 billion (~US$26.9 billion) globally, including more than A$19.8 billion across its Australian projects. The financing supports AirTrunk’s Net Zero 2030 target of net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030 through measures including energy efficiency, renewable energy matching and lower-carbon technologies, while driving progressive reductions in Scope 3 emissions through lower embodied carbon across new data centre builds. At SYD3, construction measures include the use of lower carbon steel and concrete, as well as a target to divert at least 90 per cent of non-hazardous construction waste from landfill. Construction of the expanded SYD3 development, led by A W Edwards, is underway, with completion expected by mid-2028. Strong lender backing for SYD3 expansion A consortium of 32 local and international financial institutions backed the green loan, making it one of the largest lending groups assembled for a data centre financing in Australia. The green loan was underwritten by 14 lead banks: Banco Santander, S.A.; BNP Paribas; Crédit Agricole Corporate and Investment Bank; DBS Bank Ltd.; Deutsche Bank; ING Bank N.V.; Mizuho Bank, Ltd.; MUFG Bank, Ltd.; National Australia Bank Limited; Royal Bank of Canada, Société Générale; Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation; The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited; and United Overseas Bank Limited.
