Microsoft Research says two researchers, including Xinzhi Zhang of its Machine Learning and Optimization group, have proved the Kannan–Lovász–Simonovits (KLS) conjecture, an open problem in high-dimensional geometry since 1995. The proof shows the bound holds regardless of dimension. It came from a human-directed process in which AI systems explored mathematical possibilities while the researchers evaluated and redirected the search. Independent researchers have validated it, followed by machine-checked formal verification.
