Infrastructure and safety led Australia's government releases on 20 October, across five items from New South Wales, Queensland and the Commonwealth. The NSW Government named Teralba in the Hunter as its preferred site for a state-owned train factory and proposed Workplace Protection Orders to shield workers from abusive customers. Queensland began Bruce Highway works at Gairloch and reported fewer child hospitalisations after new e-mobility laws, while the Australian Antarctic Division sent RSV Nuyina south to begin a major construction project at Davis research station.

The Australian Antarctic Division says the RSV Nuyina departed Hobart on the season’s first voyage south with 90 people and more than 950 tonnes of cargo, among it two helicopters, two excavators and a reverse osmosis plant. Over half of that load supports the $272.5 million Davis Critical Infrastructure Works, a six-year upgrade of key Davis station buildings. Work this summer centres on new water production facilities, and the project is expected to finish in 2032.

Construction has begun on two Bruce Highway sections at Gairloch, between Ingham and Cardwell in north Queensland, to widen the road, improve drainage and reduce flood-related closures. The works are among 150 projects jointly funded by the Albanese and Crisafulli Governments through the $9 billion Bruce Highway investment. Under the Targeted Safety Program, 18 projects have been completed, 20 are underway and seven are due to start construction this year.

Since then police have seized more than 600 non-compliant devices, issued 2,812 traffic infringement notices, including almost 1,800 for helmet offences, and intercepted 78 drink riders, Ministers Tim Nicholls and Dan Purdie said.

The NSW Government is introducing legislation for Workplace Protection Orders that would let courts ban threatening, abusive or violent customers aged 14 and over from workplaces, from contacting staff or from possessing weapons. Employers, unions, business groups and safety representatives could apply on workers’ behalf, and breaches would carry up to two years’ jail, a $5,500 fine or both. The orders will start in retail and are expected to take effect within 12 months of the laws passing.

The NSW Government has named a former Glencore-owned mine site at Teralba in the Hunter as its preferred location for a state-owned factory to build the next generation of passenger trains, with Broadmeadow kept as an alternative. Work would begin with the Tangara replacement fleet, followed by Millennium and OSCAR replacements in the 2040s.
