The National Cyber Security Centre is using Cyber Smart Week, running 5–11 October 2026, to urge New Zealanders and organisations to “find a scam before it finds you”. Deputy Director-General Catriona Robinson said people are the strongest line of defence and that new AI tools are making many feel more vulnerable to attack. The NCSC is urging organisations to adopt basics such as data back-ups, multi-factor authentication and an incident plan.

Taumata Arowai has directed the Ōpaki Water Supply Association to chlorinate its drinking water supply by 8 October 2026 after repeated E. coli contamination. A boil-water notice remains in place, with weekly sampling required. The Water Services Authority said the direction is needed to protect public health in the Wairarapa community supply.

Rail Minister Winston Peters welcomed KiwiRail’s annual result, citing a $162 million operating surplus and 11 percent growth in rail freight revenues for the year to 30 June 2026. Freight volumes rose three percent to 3.5 billion net tonne kilometres, with KiwiRail moving about a quarter of New Zealand’s exports. He also noted Interislander reliability of 99 percent last year and 100 percent so far this year.
