### [Commission recommends removing outdated mobile tower-sharing rules](https://mediarelease.co/nz/mr02362-commission-recommends-removing-outdated-mobile-tower-27102026.html)

Issued by: Commerce Commission · Original source: https://comcom.govt.nz/news-and-media/news-and-events/2026/commission-recommends-removing-outdated-mobile-tower-sharing-rules/

The Commerce Commission has recommended removing mobile tower-sharing rules introduced in 2001, after Spark, One NZ and 2degrees sold their towers to specialist tower companies. Its review found tower companies and mobile operators are negotiating access commercially and that regulation is no longer needed to support competition. Telecommunications Commissioner Tristan Gilbertson says the current rules provide no effective backstop. The Minister for Media and Communications will decide whether to remove them.

From 1 February 2027, certain consumer sand products, including toys for children under 14, must be tested and shown to be asbestos-free before they can be sold in New Zealand. The Unsafe Goods (Consumer Sand Products) Notice, issued on 23 October 2026, will be enforced by the Commerce Commission and the New Zealand Customs Service. Since November 2025, 23 sand products have been recalled, affecting around 46,000 items. The notice will stay in place for 18 months.
