An independent Expert Academic Panel on Neurodiversity report backs tailored, needs-based workplace support for neurodivergent people rather than diagnosis-led approaches. The Department for Work and Pensions said programmes such as Connect to Work and Pathways to Work Advisers are already helping people into jobs, within a wider £3.5 billion disability employment investment by the end of the decade. The report also urges Universal Design and further research.

The Northern Ireland Office will reopen its Connect Fund for a third round, offering up to £500,000 for voluntary and community projects that strengthen East-West links between Northern Ireland and Great Britain. The scheme has already awarded over £1 million to 46 projects. Applications are expected to open at the start of November, Minister Sarah Owen said after visiting a Belfast recipient group.

### [UK leads major Joint Expeditionary Force Exercise as defence ministers meet in Iceland](https://mediarelease.co/uk/mr01155-uk-leads-major-joint-expeditionary-force-exercise-02102026.html)

The Ministry of Defence said hundreds of British personnel are training with UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force allies in Exercise Lion Protector 26 across the North Atlantic, High North and Baltic Sea. The drills focus on protecting critical infrastructure and countering Russian hybrid threats, including Royal Marines training in the Faroe Islands. Defence ministers are meeting in Iceland, with Canada and Ukraine also attending.

### [Drought permit granted to help Ardingly Reservoir](https://mediarelease.co/uk/mr01154-drought-permit-granted-to-help-ardingly-reservoir-02102026.html)

Issued by: Environment Agency · Original source: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/drought-permit-granted-to-help-ardingly-reservoir

The Environment Agency has granted South East Water a drought permit to help protect public supply from Ardingly Reservoir in West Sussex, which serves about 280,000 customers and stood at 23% capacity on 28 September. The permit reduces compensation flows into the River Ouse system but will not alone secure supply, with further drought-plan steps possible. Average winter rainfall is needed for recovery by spring.
