From 31 October 2026, families of workers who die from asbestos-related or dust-related diseases before claiming compensation will receive the full award rather than a reduced dependant payment. Around 300 families a year are expected to benefit; for a 60-year-old claimant, a dependant could receive £56,656 instead of £24,526. Minister Sir Stephen Timms said the change ends a longstanding unfairness, at an estimated cost of £2 million to £6 million a year.
