## Releases

### [Stronger laws for police using facial recognition technology](https://mediarelease.co/uk/mr02647-stronger-laws-for-police-using-facial-recognition-technology-04112026.html)

Issued by: Home Office · Original source: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/stronger-laws-for-police-using-facial-recognition-technology

New laws will govern police use of facial recognition, requiring it to be intelligence-led and proportionate and used only when officers believe wanted people could be present. An independent watchdog will oversee current and future police technologies and could stop forces that fail to comply. Technologies must be independently tested against bias by age, gender or race. The changes follow a public consultation that backed the tool’s effectiveness while calling for stronger safeguards.

The Energy Independence Bill has been introduced to overhaul Britain’s energy system, underpinning plans to scrap gas standing charges, protect household bill savings and crack down on rogue energy companies and landlords. Around 23 million households would gain more control over costs, with about 60% of gas account holders expected to save an average of £45 a year. The Bill also puts shifting 75% of domestic Renewables Obligation costs onto public spending on a lasting legal footing and bars new North Sea oil and gas exploration licences.

Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant has marked the 25th anniversary of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, calling it a major milestone in Northern Ireland's history. He said creating a modern, accountable and representative police service was a core pillar of the Belfast Agreement, paid tribute to serving and former officers, and remembered those who died in the line of duty, including in the Royal Ulster Constabulary.

Since April, 36 arrests have been made, and illegal sites at Kidlington and Hoad's Wood have been cleared.
