Alongside that diplomacy, the Government committed £28 million to help countries protect nature and £10 million more for research on drivers of biodiversity decline. The UK restated its commitment to reversing and halting nature loss.

Potential Sciences, a British firm applying AI to medicine design, has secured Sovereign AI support combining capital and compute as it announces an eight-figure funding round. The government programme backs promising UK AI companies so they can scale from Britain. Budget funding of up to £15 million will expand early-years book gifting so roughly 300,000 more pre-school children in England can receive books before they start school. The scheme builds on existing charity programmes including Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library UK and BookTrust, with the goal of improving school readiness and encouraging reading from a young age.

Councils in England are set to gain powers to curb poorly parked rental e-bikes, clear blocked pavements and address related antisocial behaviour. National standards will clarify expectations for shared-scheme operators, riders and local authorities. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander framed the change as part of everyday fixes that put more control in local hands while making streets safer.

A new legal duty will require employers to show salary details in job adverts so applicants know the pay before they apply. The Prime Minister also confirmed Siemens Mobility will provide engineering and technology work experience for 10,000 young people, supporting a broader government target of 200,000 placements. The package is aimed at fairer hiring and helping more young people into employment.

Eight new regional water councils will give local leaders, customers and businesses a stronger say over how water companies invest, shaping priorities on sewage, flooding, drought and future supplies. Mayors will also gain new powers under a strengthened Water Bill to hold companies to account for performance. The reforms aim to move decisions closer to communities facing different local challenges, from sewage pollution at Lake Windermere to drought constraints around Cambridge.

The Care Leaver Homelessness Reduction Action Plan, launched at the start of Care Leavers Month 2026, sets new duties on councils to support young people as they leave care and move toward independent living. Local authorities must publish accommodation plans, work with housing partners and include support for those at risk of homelessness in their local offer. Care leavers can no longer be found intentionally homeless. The plan also commits targeted advice to higher-risk areas, overseen by MHCLG youth homelessness advisers.

New TB herd breakdowns in England are down by a fifth on the previous 12 months, and 2026 is the first year in more than a decade with no badger cull linked to the disease.
