Health targets: Physiotherapist boost will cut orthopaedic wait times

1 Oct 2025

The Government is boosting physiotherapy services to help cut orthopaedic wait times and improve health outcomes for New Zealanders.

Health Minister Dr Shane Reti has announced a significant investment in physiotherapy services as part of the Government's health targets to reduce waiting times for orthopaedic procedures.

"We know that early intervention through physiotherapy can prevent many people from needing surgery, and for those who do need surgery, pre-operative physiotherapy can improve outcomes and reduce recovery times," Dr Reti said.

The initiative includes:

  • Increased funding for physiotherapy services in primary care
  • Expanded access to physiotherapy in community settings
  • Enhanced training and support for physiotherapists
  • Better integration between physiotherapy and orthopaedic services

"This is about getting people the right care at the right time. By investing in physiotherapy services, we can help people manage their conditions better and reduce the pressure on our hospital system," Dr Reti said.

The funding boost is part of the Government's broader health targets aimed at improving access to healthcare and reducing wait times across the health system.

Health targets are a key part of the Government's plan to improve health outcomes for all New Zealanders, with a focus on reducing inequities and ensuring everyone can access the care they need.
