## Original release

Land purchase confirmed for future greenfield hospital site in Drury Attribute to Health New Zealand Chief Executive Dr Dale Bramley A parcel of land in Drury has been bought by Health New Zealand to be developed as the first new greenfield hospital site in Auckland in a generation. In a major milestone for the development of the city’s health services, a 13-hectare site on Karaka Rd will eventually become the location of Auckland’s next major public hospital. The $45.3 million purchase from Fisher & Paykel Healthcare will allow Health NZ to meet the future healthcare needs of the South Auckland community, strategically located in the rapidly growing corridor between South Auckland and northern Waikato. It will ultimately become the first new public hospital site in the city since the opening of Manukau Super Clinic/Health Park in 1997 and, before that, North Shore Hospital in 1984. “This is a once-in-a-generation purchase that will benefit Aucklanders for many decades to come,” Health NZ Chief Executive Dr Dale Bramley said. “Drury is strategically located in Auckland’s high-growth southern corridor, which connects the city to the Waikato. The hospital that is ultimately built on this land will play an important role in linking care across these districts to meet future population needs. “Timelines for construction have not been set but services ultimately developed on this site will complement and strengthen the wider health network, including existing services at Middlemore Hospital, Manukau Health Park and Waikato.” Planning for the acquisition was first signalled in the Northern Region’s Long-Term Investment Plan and Dr Dale Bramley said it was pleasing to see things moving ahead. "Securing this site allows us to begin planning for the future healthcare needs of the region, ensuring we can start considering how to scale-up our workforce capacity and infrastructure to support a growing and changing population." Located near the future Ngākōroa railway station on State Highway 22, which is expected to open in 2027, and with easy access to key transport routes, including Auckland Airport, the site will offer excellent long-term accessibility for patients, whānau, staff and visitors from across South Auckland and the wider region. "Making health services accessible is a critical consideration in planning future infrastructure. The Drury location provides excellent connectivity and positions us well to deliver healthcare services closer to where people live as South Auckland continues to grow,” Dr Bramley said. Health NZ will continue working closely with local communities, iwi, local government and health sector partners as planning progresses.
