## Original release

DOC and Ngāti Konohi are inviting the public to have their say on the 25-year review of Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve. The review will assess how effectively the reserve is achieving its objectives, and identify opportunities to improve management, visitor experiences, education, research, protection of marine life, and partnerships with tangata whenua. A survey is now open for anyone who uses, values, or enjoys the reserve to share their views. Established in 1999 after a joint application by Ngāti Konohi and DOC, Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve protects a diverse range of marine habitats and species along the Tairāwhiti coast. Matt Tong, DOC Operations Manager Tairāwhiti, says survey responses will help inform the future of the reserve. "We know Te Tapuwae o Rongokako is a special place for many people,” says Matt. “This is a chance to reflect on the last 25 years, hear what is and isn’t working well, and think about what the future could hold for this remarkable place. “We want to hear from everyone with an interest in Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve. Tangata whenua, scientists, school kids, locals, anyone who is interested in the future of this marine environment, please take a few minutes to share your views. Marine reserves are one of the best tools we have to protect marine ecosystems, and your input will help ensure Te Tapuwae o Rongokako continues meeting the needs and expectations of the communities who value and use it." Mahora Edwards of Ngāti Konohi, Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve Chair, says the reserve was established with the future in mind. “Twenty-five years on, it is now our responsibility to ensure that the voices of today help shape the future of Te Tapuwae o Rongokako,” says Mahora. “This is our opportunity to look back, to listen, to learn, and to decide what we want to leave for those who come after us. For our moana. For our whānau. For our mokopuna." Submissions will help inform recommendations for the future management of the reserve, and responses close on 19 October 2026.
