## Original release

Aníbal Martín is a longtime engineer in the aviation industry, who also teaches programming just outside Madrid. One summer vacation, he started to notice he was struggling with his leg. He was eventually diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease. While Martín can still speak, his voice has begun to fade. He records lessons and sends audio messages to his students, and he noticed the change in his own voice. He began to feel he no longer recognized himself. But he wants to keep teaching. With ElevenLabs voice restoration, he’s been able to create a digital version of his own voice, so if he does lose his voice, he can keep sharing what he knows in a voice that’s still unmistakably his. “Being able to hear my own voice means being able to remain myself,” Martín said. Martín found out about ElevenLabs through adELA (Asociación Española de Esclerosis Lateral Amiotrófica), Spain’s leading ALS association. Its mission is to give people living with ALS across Spain free access to its voice restoration and preservation technology. Today, ElevenLabs announced a partnership with adELA, the first Spanish initiative under the ElevenLabs Impact Program. Spain is also the first country where the technology is available through a national patient association. How voice restoration works Working with adELA, Martín got access to a psychologist, physiotherapist, and speech therapist after his diagnosis. Together, they worked to rebuild his voice through recordings. He describes it as, “A light at the end of the tunnel.” Eligible people diagnosed with ALS can create a digital version of their voice in one of two ways. If their speech hasn’t yet changed significantly, they can record new samples. If it already has, they can upload old recordings to ElevenLabs instead. People can keep talking with family, friends, and caregivers in a voice that sounds like them. Why voice matters for people with ALS An estimated 4,000–4,500 people in Spain live with ALS, and for many, it will lead to the loss of speech. For many people, keeping their own voice is a way to hold on to their identity and their connection with the people around them. “Voice is deeply tied to identity and how we connect with and contribute to the world,” said Gabi Leibowitz, Head of Impact at ElevenLabs. “For people living with permanent voice loss, we’ve seen that voice restoration can help protect dignity, autonomy, and the ability to keep participating in family, work, and society.” Thanks to this partnership, others in Spain will. For Martín, voice is more than a means of communication. It is part of his identity as someone who teaches, a father, and a friend. It’s a way to keep sharing knowledge, engaging with the world, and contributing to society. ElevenLabs' voice restoration technology has allowed him to continue his life’s work. Working with adELA adELA has supported people with ALS and their families for more than 30 years. The nonprofit provides specialized care, psychological support, and social guidance, and it advocates for greater awareness of the disease and more research into it. Martín has volunteered with adELA since 2020, and spent the past year working with the organization to help its patients preserve their voices before they lose them. “Identity is, in large part, the voice,” Martín said. “When someone hears your voice, they look at you.” People living with ALS in Spain can apply for access through adELA.
