Works have begun on a one-kilometre Ballarat-bound section of the Western Freeway at Pykes Creek Reservoir near Ballan, Victoria. The $21 million upgrade will realign the lanes into two wider lanes supporting a consistent 110km/h limit, widen shoulders and add safety barriers for the 13,000 vehicles using the stretch daily. The NSW Government has opened Expressions of Interest for a development partner for Bradfield City's Enterprise Precinct, near Western Sydney International Airport. The partner will deliver an initial 6.7 hectares of land, with a further 7 hectares possible after the first stage. The precinct is aimed at sectors including advanced manufacturing, aerospace, semiconductor technology, clean technology, freight and defence, supporting a long-term vision of 20,000 jobs and 10,000 homes.
Queensland Rail will return its full South East Queensland weekday timetable across all lines on Monday 16 November, ahead of schedule. A reduced timetable was introduced in May because of a maintenance backlog linked to protected industrial action, with close to 2,500 notices received. Major lines will return to six-to-ten-minute average peak frequencies and express services will be restored, after agreement on five of seven enterprise agreements.
The Hervey Bay Hospital expansion in Queensland has officially opened, adding a 10-bed Intensive Care Unit, a 25-bed medical ward, an extra lift and a rooftop helipad. The helipad sits 35 metres from the Emergency Department, replacing a 120-metre ground-level transfer. The Queensland Government said the Hospital Rescue Plan project, built in vacant space on Level 2 of the Emergency Department building, was delivered on time and under budget.
Total dwelling approvals in Australia rose 5.1 per cent in September to 17,948 in seasonally adjusted terms, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said. Approvals for private dwellings excluding houses rose 16.6 per cent to 6,579, while private sector house approvals fell 5.3 per cent to 10,432, the largest fall since August 2025. The value of total building approved rose 13.0 per cent to $19.02 billion, driven by non-residential approvals.
Phase 1 of the National Gun Buyback began in NSW on 2 November, with 331 appointments already booked to surrender 2,430 firearms. Compensation ranges from $450 to $1000 under a fixed schedule, and up to 274,000 firearms are estimated to be eligible. Six police stations are accepting surrenders, rising to 146 by February. Eligible firearms dealers can also access support payments of up to $25,000 and licence fee relief of up to $500.
New NSW underquoting laws take effect from 17 November, requiring real estate agents to include a selling price or price range in residential property advertisements, ending "price on inquiry" listings. From 8 February 2027, agents must also provide a Statement of Information explaining how an estimated selling price was determined, including comparable sales. The changes follow earlier reforms that doubled dummy bidding penalties to $110,000.
The NSW Government will ask national Education Ministers, meeting on Monday 2 November, to consider returning NAPLAN writing tests for Years 5, 7 and 9 to pen and paper from 2028. Year 3 students already sit the writing test on paper. Deputy Premier and Education Minister Prue Car said the move reflects evidence on the value of handwriting, alongside NSW limits on classroom screen time.

The NSW Environment Protection Authority has added a cranky Eastern Blue Groper to its Nature Hates a Tosser anti-litter campaign, running in cinemas, on TV, at stadiums and on billboards until Australia Day. More than 800,000 moviegoers are expected to see the ads. NSW has cut plastic litter by 45% since 2018-19 and is targeting a 60% reduction in all litter by 2030.
Anthony Albanese is attending the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda, running 31 October to 4 November 2026, where leaders from more than 50 countries will focus on partnerships and investment. The Prime Minister plans to raise climate change, ocean protection, trade and AI, and to promote Australia's bid for a United Nations Security Council seat in 2029-30. New Australian Bureau of Statistics figures on apparent food consumption show fruit intake rose 1.4 per cent in 2024-25, led by oranges, kiwifruit and grapes, while vegetable intake slipped 1.7 per cent to a seven-year low of about 181 grams per person daily. Avocado, pumpkin, and peas and beans recorded the steepest declines. Energy drink consumption grew 18 per cent, and total retail food and non-alcoholic beverage volumes reached an estimated 15.6 million tonnes
The Queensland Government is investing more than $50 million in energy infrastructure to support the new Toowoomba Hospital and the city's growth. Ergon Energy has begun works to more than double the capacity of the North Toowoomba Substation, with $38 million for the substation and associated works and $16 million for a dedicated 3.6km underground electricity link to the hospital. The hospital will deliver at least 538 overnight beds, and the energy works are scheduled for completion in 2028.
Victoria will host the 2029 and 2031 Australian International Airshow at Avalon, Minister for Defence Industry Melissa Horne announced, securing the Southern Hemisphere's largest aviation, aerospace and defence event through to 2031. The AMDA Foundation will deliver the event, with the Victorian Government as an Official Partner. The 2027 Airshow runs from 23 to 28 February at Avalon Airport. The 2025 event generated $240.9 million for the Victorian economy and drew more than 900 exhibitors and 291 delegations from 43 nations.
The NSW Government has released designs for new regional ambulance helicopter bases at Moruya and Wagga Wagga, the first to be delivered under a $63.95 million investment in regional aeromedical infrastructure, with planning progressing for a base at Port Macquarie. The bases will be located at local airports and include hangars, maintenance, mission-planning and training facilities. Construction at Moruya and Wagga Wagga is expected to start in early 2027, following planning approval and appointment of a building contractor.
The Western Australia Joint Counter Terrorism Team has upgraded charges against a 22-year-old Perth man, who now faces one count of acts in preparation for, or planning, a terrorist act, an offence carrying a maximum penalty of life imprisonment. Police will allege he sought help on a messaging platform with explosive devices, weapons manufacturing, combat techniques and fake documents. First arrested on 4 December 2025, he was expected to appear in the Supreme Court of Western Australia on 30 October.
Australia's physical energy exports fell 3.1 per cent to their lowest level in 10 years in 2024–25, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Black coal remained the largest energy export despite a 1.1 per cent decline, followed by LNG, down 2.2 per cent. Renewable energy production rose almost 10 per cent, led by solar up 11 per cent and wind up 15 per cent, while energy use per person has fallen 16 per cent over the past decade.
Two Victorian research teams will share $1.98 million through the mRNA Victoria Pipeline grant program to move new cancer treatments towards Phase 1 clinical trials, Minister for Economic Development and Medical Research Anthony Carbines announced. The University of Melbourne receives $980,000 to study how mRNA could make CAR T-cell therapies more effective against solid cancers, while WEHI receives $1 million for potential mRNA treatments for aggressive brain cancers. Victoria has funded 67 RNA projects worth $36 million since 2021.
The NSW Government has officially opened the new acute services building at Shoalhaven Memorial Hospital, the centrepiece of a $440 million redevelopment serving the Illawarra and South Coast. The seven-storey building includes an expanded emergency department, a new intensive care unit, a dedicated acute mental health unit, double the number of operating theatres and a rooftop helipad. Premier Chris Minns and Health Minister Ryan Park said 120 additional health staff started at the hospital this week.
Queensland Parliament has passed the Breach Bail, Go to Jail and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2026, which the Crisafulli Government describes as the strongest bail laws in the nation. From 30 November 2026, adult and youth offenders who commit a serious crime while on bail will face a mandatory minimum of 12 months' imprisonment. Serious offenders must also meet a new 'high degree of confidence' test to be granted bail, and police will no longer be required to consider diversion for youths.
The Queensland Government has released a three-month delivery update on implementing the Child Safety Commission of Inquiry, with seven recommendations in progress or complete and the remaining 41 on track over the coming 21 months. The government accepted or accepted-in-principle 48 of the Anastassiou Inquiry's 52 recommendations and committed $200 million to reforms. A Child Safety Cabinet Committee overseeing implementation has met eight times, and new rules limit hotel and motel emergency accommodation.
Melbourne will be the Asia-Pacific base for Nicolab, a Dutch developer of AI stroke imaging software, with a research and development centre creating 20 high-skilled jobs and support from the $150 million Victorian Investment Fund. Its StrokeViewer platform, which cuts serious stroke assessment times from hours to minutes, has helped clinicians assess more than 12,000 suspected stroke patients across regional Victoria since 2023, according to Minister for Economic Development Anthony Carbines.
NSW Health has received 40 motor neurone disease notifications from clinicians as at 27 October 2026, four of them retrospective, after NSW became the first Australian jurisdiction to make MND a notifiable condition. Medical practitioners have been required to notify cases since 1 September 2026 under the Public Health Amendment (Motor Neurone Disease) Order 2026. Health Minister Ryan Park said the surveillance data could help plan services and support research into the disease's causes.
A 40-year-old Sydney man has been charged over his alleged role in a transnational network suspected of laundering more than $123 million for organised crime syndicates. Taskforce Avarus, an AFP-led initiative with AUSTRAC, the ACIC and Australian Border Force, executed search warrants in Strathfield and Burwood on 27 October, seizing about $750,000 in cash, luxury handbags and watches. The AFP will allege he controlled shell company accounts used to convert proceeds into cryptocurrency or remit them overseas.
The Consumer Price Index rose 4.3 per cent in the 12 months to September 2026, up from 4.0 per cent in the year to August, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Housing was the largest contributor at 5.2 per cent, driven by new dwellings and electricity, while transport rose 8.7 per cent on higher fuel prices. Trimmed mean annual inflation was 3.6 per cent, and the CPI rose 1.3 per cent over the September quarter.
A production licence has been approved to restart the Patricia-Baleen gas fields off Victoria's Gippsland coast, granted to Cooper Energy, a subsidiary of Amplitude Energy, through the Commonwealth-Victoria Offshore Petroleum Joint Authority. The project is expected to deliver up to 15 petajoules of gas over its lifetime, equivalent to seven per cent of Victoria's gas use last year, with production expected from 2028 to 2035 through the existing Orbost Gas Plant.
The Queensland Government has introduced legislation creating a new offence for the non-consensual creation of intimate images or intimate audio using digital technology, including AI-generated images and nudify applications. The offence also covers digitally generated people who closely resemble an identifiable real person and carries a maximum penalty of three years' imprisonment. Attorney-General Deb Frecklington said the laws close a loophole, with deepfake content having been used to cyber bully students and teachers in Queensland schools.
New Australian Bureau of Statistics causes-of-death data show dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, was behind 19,019 deaths in 2025, passing 10 per cent of the national total for the first time and nearly double its 2006 share. Women made up 61.1 per cent of dementia deaths. Overall mortality returned to its pre-pandemic trend, while drug-induced deaths reached 2,063, with stimulant-related deaths up from 504 in 2021 to 779
Treasurer Jim Chalmers has introduced the Treasury Laws Amendment (Tax Reform No. 4) Bill 2026, which establishes an Innovative Business CGT Concession so early investors in innovative start-ups receive a significant discount on future capital gains. The Bill retargets the Research and Development Tax Incentive from 1 July 2028 towards core R&D, especially by young firms, and expands venture capital tax incentives from 1 July 2027. It builds on $3.8 billion in tax relief for businesses and start-ups.
In a speech to the House of Representatives on 27 October, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese urged Parliament to pass the Digital Duty of Care Bill, placing a positive obligation on tech companies to protect Australians from seriously harmful and illegal online content. Social media, online games and AI chatbots would need risk assessments and must protect under-18s from harmful content and addictive features, and nudify apps would be banned. Cyberbullying response times would halve from 48 to 24 hours, with fines of up to $109.2 million.
The NSW Minns Labor Government has launched its 2031 Road Safety Action Plan, aiming to halve fatalities and cut serious injuries over the next five years. Transport for NSW developed the plan after statewide consultation, with priorities spanning vulnerable road users, safer vehicles, high-speed roads, urban places and post-crash care. Funded actions include regional barriers and rumble strips, e-bike regulation, average speed camera work for light vehicles, and stronger roadside enforcement.

From 26 October, trained GPs in Victoria can diagnose and treat ADHD in adults and children aged six and over, removing the need to see a specialist. The Victorian Government says 150 GPs have completed training delivered by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, with clinics in places including Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Mildura and Shepparton. Up to 163,000 Victorian children and 320,000 adults may be living with ADHD, and specialist waits can reach six to 12 months.
The Queensland Government's Breach Bail, Go to Jail and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2026, to be debated in Parliament this week, introduces a "high degree of confidence" test requiring police and courts to refuse bail to serious repeat offenders unless satisfied they will not reoffend. Serious offences committed on bail would carry a mandatory minimum 12-month sentence. The Bill also removes the requirement for police to consider cautions and other diversion before charging youth offenders.
The National Gun Buyback Scheme in NSW begins on 2 November, with eligible firearms licence holders able to book surrender appointments through the Gun Safe portal from 26 October. The 12-month scheme offers compensation for surplus and reclassified firearms; about 18 per cent of licence holders are eligible and up to 274,000 firearms could be returned. It follows gun law reforms passed after the Bondi Beach terror attack, and $42.8 million has been invested in the NSW Firearms Registry.
The NSW Government says that if re-elected it will commit $6.8 billion to the South Coast Rail Plan, including electrifying the Kiama to Bomaderry line and duplicating key track sections on the T4 Illawarra and South Coast lines. An immediate $621 million is going to power, signalling, drainage and embankment upgrades already underway. Detailed planning starts in 2027, with construction expected to finish by the mid to late 2030s. The line carries 7.6 million passengers a year.
Tasmania's Save 000 for Emergencies campaign aims to reduce non-emergency calls to Ambulance Tasmania, which responded to 120,831 incidents in 2025-26, up 6.2 per cent on 2024-25. Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing Bridget Archer said up to one in five triple zero calls do not require an ambulance to be dispatched. The campaign began on radio and social media on 19 October and extends to buses, free-to-air TV and streaming from 26 October.
The Tasmanian Government has released a three-year plan to manage wild fallow deer in and around towns, roads and other populated areas, with area-specific control plans to be developed with landholders, councils and communities. Minister for Primary Industries and Water Gavin Pearce said Acton Park, the Tasman Peninsula and Bruny Island will be tackled first, with localities including Launceston's outskirts, West Tamar, Westbury and Bicheno to follow. The Tasmanian Game Council welcomed the plan.
Air New Zealand's first direct Auckland to Hobart flight of the 2026-27 season has arrived, restoring a seasonal international link for Tasmania, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Kerry Vincent said. The season includes up to 170 flights and more than 33,000 seats, an increase of 36 flights (27 per cent) and 7,268 seats (28 per cent) on last year. The Tasmanian Government links the service to its Access Strategy and tourism growth plans.
Victoria's publicly owned SEC has found an estimated $440,000 in annual electricity savings across 21 public schools by reviewing network charges and moving them onto better tariffs, including $75,000 a year at Wulerrp Secondary College. The SEC is launching a Network Tariff Optimisation Tool to find savings across thousands of government sites, with around 1,400 government schools' tariffs now under review. The SEC supplies 100 per cent renewable electricity to 4,400 Victorian government sites.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Infrastructure Minister Catherine King marked the first passenger flight from Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, a full Jetstar Airbus A320 service, JQ362, to the Gold Coast. Designated at Badgerys Creek in 1986, the airport followed 15 years of planning and seven years of construction, with more than 13,000 workers on the precinct. It is part of an $18 billion Western Sydney investment, with international services from Fiji Airways, Vietjet, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways.

The NSW Government has announced a $17 million funding boost to expedite overdue endoscopy procedures after NSW Health data collection produced preliminary estimates of about 20,000 overdue procedures, with final figures still to be validated. Capacity will be increased starting with the most urgent cases, and work is underway to centrally monitor endoscopy wait times, which are not currently tracked centrally. About 350,000 endoscopies are performed in NSW each year, including 160,000 through NSW Health.
New planning controls have been finalised for former coal mining land at the Mt Arthur Coal Mine near Muswellbrook and the Macquarie Coal Complex at West Wallsend, which the Albanese and Minns Labor Governments say could unlock more than 7,000 jobs in the Hunter. The BHP-owned Mt Arthur site, due to end mining in 2030, covers 5,700 hectares with up to 5,900 jobs, while the Macquarie site has a 1,142-hectare employment precinct with up to 1,130 jobs. Land will be released only once rehabilitated.
The Queensland Government has opened the Queensland Resources Common User Facility in Townsville, an Australian-first purpose-built site where companies can test and validate critical minerals processing methods at scale without building their own demonstration plants. The facility will initially focus on vanadium, with capacity to expand to cobalt and rare earth elements, and Vecco Group is its foundation customer. It is part of a $146.1 million critical minerals investment in the 2026-27 Budget, Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dale Last said.
The Victorian Government says the production licence for GB Energy’s $1 billion Golden Beach Gas Project off Ninety Mile Beach in Gippsland has been approved. The project will produce gas from 2028 before the offshore field is converted into storage from 2029, boosting Victoria’s gas storage capacity by around 70 per cent to help meet peak winter demand forecast by AEMO. Energy and Resources Minister Jaclyn Symes said it would mean more gas ready for winter and less pressure on prices.
Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Assistant Treasurer Daniel Mulino have opened consultation on financial sector deregulation measures they say will cut red tape by $780 million a year. The proposals would raise the cap on banks’ covered bond issuance, align Financial Accountability Regime reporting for smaller banks with prudential thresholds, and double the withdrawal limit for deceased estate expenses from $15,000 to $30,000. Sunsetting banking regulations would be remade before 1 April 2027, with implementation intended from later this year.
NSW Parliament has passed legislation creating the Great Koala National Park, adding 178,000 hectares of state forest and other Crown land on the Mid North Coast that is home to around 12,000 koalas and more than 100 other threatened species. Combined with existing reserves, the park will span more than 475,000 hectares and is on track to open before the end of the year after the Clean Energy Regulator approved its carbon project. Around 100 new National Parks and Wildlife Service roles are being created.
Queensland’s Unlocking Water Project has completed studies of the Cape York, Burdekin Basin and Pioneer Valley water plan areas, recommending more than 132,000 megalitres be made available for agriculture and industry, Water Minister Ann Leahy said. The recommendations include releasing 130,000 ML in the Burdekin’s Belyando-Suttor sub-catchment and 2,000 ML around Lakeland in Cape York, while the Pioneer Valley focus is better use of existing water and trading. Ten of the state’s 23 water plans have now been studied, with all due by 2028.
