House of Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle will attend the 153rd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Arusha, Tanzania, from 5 to 9 October 2026, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office said. More than 600 parliamentarians are expected at the first IPU Assembly hosted by Tanzania, with talks on good governance, climate change and inequality. Sir Lindsay will also meet alumni of UK-supported Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships and visit a school working on inclusive education.

Lieutenant General Sir Charlie Collins, the UK’s Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Military Strategy and Operations), has concluded a visit to Lebanon, the British Embassy Beirut said. He met Speaker of Parliament Nabih Berri, Lebanese Armed Forces Commander General Rodolph Haykal and UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon Jean Arnault. Talks centred on security in south Lebanon, and he reaffirmed UK support for the Lebanese armed forces and for diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions.

DCMS Secretary of State Lisa Nandy has issued a Public Interest Intervention Notice under section 42 of the Enterprise Act 2002 over BT Group’s planned acquisition of TalkTalk. The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport cited risks to life, public services and vulnerable customers if TalkTalk’s phone and broadband services were disrupted. The Competition and Markets Authority must report back by 19 October 2026, and TalkTalk customers do not need to take any action.

New Department for Work and Pensions rules in force from 5 October 2026 align Housing Benefit earnings calculations with Universal Credit for more than 325,000 residents of supported housing and temporary accommodation, ending a “cliff edge” loss of income when they work more hours. The Housing Benefit (Earned Income Disregards) Regulations 2026 introduce five new earned income disregards for working-age claimants, including nearly 50,000 young people.
