The Competition and Markets Authority has designated Aldi, Lidl GB and Lidl NI as Large Grocery Retailers under the Groceries Market Investigation (Controlled Land) Order 2010. The decision stops them using restrictive covenants and exclusivity arrangements in land agreements to block rival supermarkets opening nearby, rules that have applied to Asda, Co-op, Marks and Spencer, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco and Waitrose since 2010. The UK grocery market is worth an estimated £222.7 billion.

A government White Paper published on 22 October proposes prison sentences of up to 14 years and unlimited fines for those who damage the undersea cables and pipelines carrying the UK's gas, electricity and international data. The plans would update 140-year-old legislation, place new security and resilience duties on subsea telecoms cable providers and give the government powers to direct providers where national security is at risk. Undersea cables carry around 99% of the UK's international data, and undersea pipelines provide 74% of its gas supply.
