The Home Office has set out an earned settlement model under which migrants will no longer gain permanent UK residence almost automatically after five years. The highest earners could settle within three years, those earning over £50,271 and some public service workers after five, others after a new default of 10 years, and rule-breakers after at least 20. All applicants must have a clean criminal record, high-standard English, no taxpayer debt and sustained National Insurance contributions.

It highlights increased police activity including metal detection, rapid response e-bikes, extra foot patrols and live facial recognition. The campaign is also being piloted in Birmingham city centre. Policing and Crime Minister Sarah Jones said everyone in Westminster and Croydon deserves to feel safe on their streets.
