Original release

A crash-prone bridge in Manawatū currently down to one lane is set to be replaced with funding from the Regional Infrastructure Fund, Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Transport Minister Chris Bishop say.

The project to replace Haynes Bridge on State Highway 54 will receive funding of $6.5 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund.

Mr Jones says the investment in the new bridge on a key Manawatū-Whanganui route will deliver benefits for communities and businesses throughout the region.

"Safe, reliable roads are essential for connecting people to jobs, markets and opportunities. This investment will help ensure communities and businesses across Manawatū-Whanganui have a transport connection they can depend on, while supporting continued economic activity across the region."

Mr Bishop says Haynes Bridge has a significant crash history and is currently operating as a single-lane crossing.

“The bridge is aging and deteriorating. If it deteriorates further or requires closure, residents, businesses and freight operators could face a diversion of around 59km.

“A replacement will create a safer, more reliable route for everyone who relies on SH54. This project delivers two important outcomes: improving safety and improving resilience.”

Design and consenting work is expected to begin within six months, with construction expected to commence in 2027.
