As I’ve traveled around the world this year, I’ve heard loud and clear from healthcare professionals how much need there is for a thoughtful but practical educational resource on AI, made specifically for healthcare. Today, we're announcing the Google AI for Healthcare Professionals Certificate, a new program designed to teach responsible, practical ways to use AI in day-to-day work. Built to fit busy schedules, the program offers flexible, self-paced lessons that focus on non-clinical administrative tasks. It is designed to be completed in less than five hours and to keep patients’ safety and privacy front and center.

Having spent my career in medicine, I know that people in healthcare are driven by a shared purpose to care for others, support families, and make a meaningful difference in their communities. Technology offers a real opportunity to support that purpose. Across disciplines, care teams are navigating how AI can shoulder administrative tasks and create more time for what matters most: patients.

Reclaiming that time has never been more urgent. A National Nursing Workforce Survey found that nearly one in three registered nurses planned to leave or retire due to unsustainable workloads. Emerging technologies are poised to ease these pressures, but nine out of 10 doctors say they want dedicated training in how to use AI effectively. Regardless of your role in healthcare, navigating AI tools shouldn’t be something you have to figure out on your own. The Google AI for Healthcare Professionals Certificate offers an opportunity to build these skills, while earning up to 5.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.

Healthcare organizations are already putting the training into practice. NYU Grossman School of Medicine, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Touro University are offering it to their faculty, residents, and medical students. Additionally, leading nursing institutions, including Purdue University School of Nursing, are offering the certificate as part of their healthcare professional training.

Clinical and medical education professionals who reviewed the curriculum also emphasize the importance of practical AI literacy.

Clinicians need tailored educational resources to understand how to use AI effectively and responsibly. The Google AI for Healthcare Professionals Certificate provides an excellent hands-on introduction, including foundational principles and relevant use cases that can help clinicians build the skills to apply AI thoughtfully to their own needs and workflows.

Built by healthcare professionals for healthcare professionals

Developed by clinicians at Google — with backgrounds spanning internal medicine, pediatrics, critical care medicine, emergency medicine, and public health — the curriculum draws on draft versions of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Artificial Intelligence Competencies Across the Learning Curriculum (which was under development at the time of the initial course design, but reflected the overall direction of the final competencies).

Across four courses, learners will explore high-impact ways to integrate AI into their daily routines.

  • Build foundational skills: Spot practical ways to use AI and confidently evaluate outputs, keeping clinical judgement, safety, and privacy at the forefront.
  • Strengthen patient communication: Translate complex medical concepts into clear, patient-friendly audio and visual guides, helping patients better understand and manage their care.
  • Optimize day-to-day administrative tasks: Streamline non-clinical work — like scheduling or reviewing dense email threads — and use natural language to build helpful tools without coding.
  • Accelerate lifelong learning: Digest complex clinical studies, organize presentations, and sharpen preparation for exams and certifications.

Designed to give time back to patient care

Continuing education is non-negotiable in healthcare, and this course is one step in supporting AI education for healthcare professionals. By streamlining the routine tasks that pull you away from the bedside, our goal is simple: to give you back the time, the focus, and the joy of caring for your patients.
