Nepean Hospital is celebrating a major milestone in its more than $1 billion redevelopment, with construction now complete on the new clinical building that will transform healthcare delivery for communities across Western Sydney and the Blue Mountains for decades to come.

The completion of the new seven-storey building is part of a once-in-a-generation investment in one of NSW's busiest hospitals and represents one of the largest health infrastructure projects ever delivered in Greater Western Sydney.

The new building will provide contemporary facilities and is set to begin welcoming patients from late 2026, marking the next stage in the major expansion and upgrade of health services for patients, carers, visitors and staff.

The facility includes a new main entry and reception, creating a visible front door for the hospital and making it easier for patients and visitors to navigate the campus.

The building will house a range of critical healthcare services, including an adult Intensive Care Unit, paediatric services, medical imaging and molecular imaging, and renal dialysis. It will also include education and training facilities, a new expanded hospital kitchen, and a range of clinical support and back-of-house services.

Located on the top floor of the building is a new Palliative Care Unit delivered through the Minns Labor Government's $93 million World Class End of Life Care Program. The purpose-built unit will provide contemporary facilities in a home-like setting, designed to support patients and their loved ones in a compassionate and comfortable environment.

Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District will commence a comprehensive operational commissioning program to prepare the facility before it welcomes patients and staff.

This will include the installation and testing of equipment, staff training and orientation, and operational readiness activities.

Departments will progressively relocate into the new building through a carefully planned and staged approach, helping ensure a safe and seamless transition into the new facilities.

Before the doors open, community members are invited to tour the new facility at a Public Open Day on Saturday, 24 October 2026, and explore key areas of the building while learning more about the redevelopment. To register for a free tour, visit Nepean Hospital Stage 2 Public Open Day.

The completion of the Stage 2 clinical building marks the final major construction component of the Nepean Hospital Redevelopment, with planning now under way for a new community health centre in Penrith to be built on the Nepean Blue Mountains Local Health District’s Lemongrove campus.

Construction is expected to start in 2027.

Across NSW, the Minns Labor Government is delivering 32 new or upgraded hospitals, with a $11.9 billion investment in the 2026-27 NSW Budget to build more beds and improve access to services, including:

  • $2 billion for the new Bankstown Hospital;
  • $910 million for the new Rouse Hill Hospital, including a $120 million contribution from the Commonwealth Government;
  • $630 million for the Fairfield Hospital Redevelopment, including an $80 million contribution from the Commonwealth Government;
  • $400 million for the Canterbury Hospital Redevelopment; and
  • $120 million for additional beds at Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospitals.

Quotes attributable to Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car:

“This upgrade marks a huge milestone in the Minns Labor Government’s work to deliver world-class healthcare for families across Penrith, the Blue Mountains and Greater Western Sydney.

“For too long our local hospitals and essential services did not keep pace with our communities, as the former Liberal-National government left major projects across Western Sydney sitting on the drawing board for years.

“The Minns Labor Government is getting on with the job of delivering new hospitals, more beds and major upgrades, including this historic $1 billion redevelopment of Nepean Hospital, so local families have access to the state-of-the-art healthcare and facilities they deserve.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Health Ryan Park:

"We are delivering more hospitals, more beds, and more staff for communities in Western Sydney and in the Blue Mountains.

“The completion of this building is a landmark moment for Nepean Hospital and the communities it serves, delivering a major expansion and upgrade of health services.

"This is a once-in-a-generation transformation and a key part of the Minns Labor Government’s $3.8 billion investment in Western Sydney hospitals, ensuring communities across Penrith, the Blue Mountains and surrounding regions continue to have access to world-class healthcare facilities close to home.

Quotes attributable to Member for Penrith Karen McKeown:

“This is an incredibly exciting milestone for the Penrith community and for the thousands of local families who rely on Nepean Hospital at some of the most important moments in their lives and for the care they need.

“Penrith is growing, and this $1 billion redevelopment is ensuring our hospital grows with us, including modern facilities, expanded and better-connected health services right here in Penrith.

“We know there’s more work to do, I’ve long said that what’s the point of upgrading Nepean Hospital if you don’t have the staff to run it. That’s why we’re delivering improved staffing levels at Nepean Hospital as well as pay rises for healthcare workers and recruitment of additional nurses, doctors, allied health professionals and paramedics.”

Quotes attributable to Member for Blue Mountains Trish Doyle:

“Nepean Hospital serves many Blue Mountains residents, and I welcome this major milestone on behalf of my community.

“I am delighted to be part of a Government that is committed to improving healthcare across NSW, and I look forward to further investment in our Local Health District in the near future.”
