The NSW Government has locked in Sydney as the host of the 64th Annual Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference in 2027, reinforcing the state’s position as Australia’s leading destination for trade, investment and innovation.

Japan is one of NSW's most important economic partners, with NSW exports to Japan worth $17.3 billion last year and investment supporting thousands of jobs across the state. Hosting this conference provides a significant opportunity to deepen that relationship and attract further investment in industries that will drive NSW's future economic growth.

Announced earlier today by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC, Governor of NSW, the event is expected to attract around 700 delegates and inject approximately $1.5 million into the NSW economy.

Coming to Sydney for the first time this decade, the conference is a major win for NSW and will provide a platform to attract new investment, strengthen commercial partnerships and create new opportunities for NSW businesses.

For more than six decades, the conference has been the premier annual forum for Australia-Japan business engagement, bringing together decision-makers from both countries to address shared economic challenges, identify new commercial opportunities and deepen collaboration.

The 2027 conference will showcase Sydney’s strengths as Australia's economic engine and highlight investment opportunities across New South Wales, including Western Sydney's transformation through Western Sydney International Airport and Bradfield City Centre.

The conference will be jointly organised by the Australia-Japan Business Co-operation Committee and the Japan-Australia Business Co-operation Committee.

Further details about the 2027 conference will be announced closer to the event.

Minister for Industry and Trade Anoulack Chanthivong said:

“Securing this conference for Sydney is a major vote of confidence in New South Wales.

“Japan is one of our most important partners, and bringing senior business leaders from both countries together in Sydney will help unlock new investment, create jobs and open new export opportunities for NSW businesses.

“It is a great honour for Sydney to host the 64th Annual Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference in 2027, bringing senior leaders together to strengthen our shared economic future and showcase opportunities across New South Wales.

“With Western Sydney Airport and Bradfield taking shape, there has never been a better time to showcase the enormous opportunities available across New South Wales and strengthen our economic partnership with Japan.”

President of the Australia-Japan Business Co-operation Committee, Peter Grey AM said:

“We are delighted Sydney will host our 64th Annual Australia-Japan Joint Business Conference, in the year marking the 70th Anniversary of the signing of the Australia-Japan Agreement on Commerce. It is highly appropriate that we gather in Sydney to celebrate that milestone, given the strength of the Japanese business community in New South Wales and the extent of the business partnerships that exist between New South Wales and Japan.

Our 2027 Conference will provide an important platform to build new commercial connections, advance collaboration in emerging industries, and showcase the significant opportunities NSW, and Australia more broadly, offers Japanese investors and businesses.”

Chairman of the Japan-Australia Business Co-operation Committee, Michiaki Hirose said:

“Japan and Australia share deep economic ties founded on trust, mutual benefit and a long history of cooperation. We are thrilled to return to Sydney for the 64th Joint Business Conference, our first gathering in the city in nine years. I look forward to seeing Sydney filled with Japanese participants and activated people-to-people exchanges.”

Her Excellency the Honourable Governor of NSW, Margaret Beazley said:

“It was a privilege to attend this year’s Joint Business Conference in Chiba, Japan, and to witness firsthand the strength and enduring significance of the relationship between our two nations.

“Sydney’s hosting of the conference in 2027 will provide a distinguished forum to further deepen our economic, institutional and people-to-people ties.”
