Original release

New ABS data shows dwelling commencements and completions increased substantially in the June quarter, after the Budget.

Commencements and completions are both up in these figures but were both falling when we came to office.

These are encouraging numbers but we know they can bounce around from quarter to quarter and that there’s more work to do.

There were 52,201 dwelling commencements in the June 2026 quarter, up 7.0 per cent in the quarter to be 14.4 per cent in annual terms. When we came to office, they were going backwards 28.9 per cent in annual terms.

There were 47,168 dwelling completions in the June quarter, up 5.8 per cent in the quarter to be 15.9 per cent in annual terms. When we came to office, they were going backwards 7.0 per cent in annual terms.

We are tackling housing supply from all angles, including funding enabling infrastructure, building 55,000 social and affordable homes and working with states and territories to streamline approvals.
