The 2026 JS Collings Trophy for the most effectively maintained water asset in the River Murray system.

This is the fourth time the Torrumbarry Weir and Lock 26 site has received the honour in the long history of the trophy.

Operated and managed by Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) under the direction of the Murray–Darling Basin Authority (MDBA), the site is located about 80 kilometres downstream of Echuca.

MDBA Executive Director of River Management Ms Jacqui Hickey said the Torrumbarry team had shown a strong commitment to maintaining the weir, lock and grounds to a high standard, while making excellent use of available resources.

“Torrumbarry plays an important role in supporting the reliable operation of the River Murray system, and this award recognises the professionalism, innovation and teamwork that goes into maintaining such a significant asset,” Ms Hickey said.

The team impressed us with their strong commitment to safety, efficiency and continuous improvement, helping ensure the weir and lock continue to serve River Murray communities and water users.

Ms Hickey also acknowledged and commended the contribution of others from within GMW who had supported the Torrumbarry team to achieve the award.

GMW General Manager Water Storage Services Jon McKeown said it was a fantastic achievement for the Torrumbarry team to be awarded the trophy.

“This is well-deserved recognition of the team's commitment to maintaining assets and facilities to a high standard,” Mr McKeown said.

The MDBA undertakes annual site inspections of important assets along the River Murray and meets with on-ground teams who operate and maintain the structures.

“These visits highlight the resourcefulness and pride teams on the ground bring to caring for River Murray assets, while providing a valuable opportunity to discuss day-to-day operations, maintenance and future improvement plans,” Ms Hickey said.

We congratulate the Torrumbarry team on this year’s win and thank all asset teams for their hard work, professionalism and dedication to looking after these sites.

The perpetual Senator JS Collings trophy is awarded to the site assessed as the most effectively maintained asset in the River Murray system. First awarded in 1943, it is named after Senator JS Collings, president of the River Murray Commission from 1941-45.
