Google published an Ask a Scientist interview with researchers Angelica Willis and Dr. Nichole Young-Lin on pairing AI with “blind sweep” prenatal ultrasounds. In a study with Northwestern Medicine and Jacaranda Health covering 1,000 mothers in Nairobi, Kenya, and 1,000 in Chicago, the machine learning model detected gestational age and fetal presentation as accurately as a trained sonographer. Health workers can learn the sweep in eight hours, and processing runs on the device without Wi-Fi or an electricity supply.

OpenAI published a customer story on how quantitative trading firm Jump Trading uses GPT-6 Astra to scale quant research. Lucas Baker, Jump's Head of LLM R&D, said the model lets agents run longer, multi-day workflows that pull from many data sources and refine their own findings. Jump keeps human review of agent outputs, such as trading signals, inside a controlled execution environment to manage financial and compliance risk.

OpenAI released a broad set of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model, publishing them in a GitHub repository with protocols for paper revisions and citations. The repository includes Lean formalizations of many proofs, 10 summaries of the model's reasoning, compute estimates and statistics on attempted problems. The average result used compute equivalent to roughly three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking. OpenAI consulted the Institute for Advanced Study's independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence and plans to fund workshops and conferences.

Anthropic expanded its Cyber Verification Program, which gives qualifying security professionals reduced cyber safeguards on models including Claude Opus 5.5, Claude Sonnet 5.5, and Claude Mythos 5.1. The program now has three tiers: Defense Access, Red Team Access, and Specialized Access, the last reviewed with the US government and absorbing Project Glasswing members. Anthropic said Glasswing partners found at least 129,000 verified software vulnerabilities between April and July 2026.

Atlassian and OpenAI expanded their partnership under a new agreement that brings OpenAI frontier models, including GPT-6 Astra and the GPT-5.6 series, to agents across Atlassian's platform and Rovo. Rovo pairs OpenAI models with Atlassian's Teamwork Graph, which links people, projects, documents, and decisions. More than 3,000 Atlassian developers already use Codex, and the companies are exploring deeper Jira integrations for assigning and reviewing work done by AI agents.

OpenAI said it is partnering with contracting software company Ironclad to train and evaluate AI agents on complex professional workflows, starting with 11 legal, commercial, and procurement tasks. GPT-6 Astra is OpenAI's first frontier model trained on Ironclad tasks. On the research evaluation, Astra averaged 55.0% against 41.6% for GPT-5.6 Sol, while estimated time per attempt fell from 37.0 to 19.2 minutes. OpenAI is inviting other software companies to propose research collaborations.

IBM and Red Hat said their Lightwell initiative has identified and remediated more than 400 previously unknown vulnerabilities in widely used Java libraries, with fixes backported to software versions running in production. The companies also made Lightwell Clearinghouse generally available, letting enterprise customers submit open source dependencies for priority review. Lightwell pairs Red Hat and IBM engineering with AI-assisted workflows, responding to AI agents that can chain lower-risk weaknesses into serious attacks.

NVIDIA says telecom operators are increasingly basing their AI strategies on open models, citing its State of AI in Telecommunications report, in which 89% of respondents said open source models and software are important to their AI strategy. The post highlights the NVIDIA Nemotron open model family, including the 30-billion-parameter Nemotron 3 Large Telco Model fine-tuned by AdaptKey, with examples from SoftBank Corp., AT&T and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison.

Google has signed a power purchase agreement with Constellation Energy to finance upgrades at six operating nuclear plants in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, adding 890 MW of capacity to the PJM grid before the end of 2032. Google said the deal, driven by its data center growth, brings the new US nuclear capacity it has enabled to over 1.5 GW. Constellation is also deploying Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise agentic workflows across its core operations.

More than 100 startups from 17 countries, selected from over 2,000 applications, will join the fourth cohort of the Google for Startups Gemini Startup Forum, a two-day in-person summit at Google’s Mountain View headquarters in November. Founders will work on their AI roadmaps with specialists from Google DeepMind and Google Cloud. The forum is part of Google’s Gemini Kit resources, which also offer eligible AI startups up to $350,000 in Cloud credits.
Cohere · Original source
Cohere researchers have released Tiny Aya L2-Thinker, a 3.35-billion-parameter model trained to reason in the user's own language rather than defaulting to English. Cohere reports the model reasons in the prompt language more than 93% of the time across 60 languages with minimal accuracy loss. The approach mixes English reasoning data, translated multilingual reasoning data and multilingual non-reasoning data, and the model weights and reasoning data are available on Hugging Face.
Mistral AI · Original source
Mistral AI has launched a public preview of Mistral Large 4 (ML4), a natively multimodal model with 1 trillion parameters and 49 billion active parameters, available through a preview API on Mistral Studio. The company said ML4 was trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in its own European datacenters. Mistral plans to release the open weights by the end of October after red-teaming with cybersecurity leaders, vetted partners and state authorities.
