South Auckland couple Ruta and Sili Ah Ching have been sentenced in the Manukau District Court for tax evasion of more than half a million dollars after being jointly charged with 14 counts. Ruta Ah Ching received nine months' home detention, and Sili Ah Ching six months' community detention plus community work. Inland Revenue says the pair kept trading through two struck-off companies and must repay $65,000 in reparation over five years.

Disability Rights Commissioner Prudence Walker told the Inclusive Futures 2026 Disability Election Forum that whichever parties form the next government must keep improving outcomes for disabled people. Walker urged election debate to avoid simplistic answers and scapegoating. She said government must uphold New Zealand's commitments under the UN Disability Convention and involve disabled people and tāngata whaikaha Māori in developing laws, policies and services.

Tenancy Services has published guidance for landlords who rent out unit title properties such as apartments and townhouses. Owners are automatically body corporate members and must give tenants a copy of the body corporate rules alongside the tenancy agreement. The guidance notes that healthy homes standards still apply, and that landlords considering a tenant's pet request in a unit title development may need to check body corporate rules.

Information from the Department of Internal Affairs' Digital Child Exploitation Team helped secure a 50-years-to-life prison sentence for 21-year-old Californian John Edward Lario, who pleaded guilty to two offences relating to the sexual abuse of children. DIA investigators identified new exploitation material in September 2024 and shared intelligence with United States Homeland Security Investigations. The resulting operation removed two children from harm, and Lario was sentenced on 2 October 2026.

Modelling by Earth Sciences New Zealand for Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand has identified the large weed bed just offshore from Rotorua as a significant source of lake weed washing up on the city lakefront after storms. The study of four wash-up events from 2020 to 2025 found they followed prolonged northerly or north-easterly winds. LINZ contributed $350,000 for the 2025/26 control season and says herbicide remains the only practical tool at this scale.

Health New Zealand is funding 22 time-limited community initiatives through the third round of its Mental Health and Addiction Community Sector Innovation Fund, providing $7.218 million with a further $8.107 million in matched funding. The projects span youth mental health, addiction recovery, alcohol harm reduction, school-based support and services for people with complex needs. Health New Zealand's Child Development Service in Tauranga has delivered its 50th Incredible Years Autism and Language Delay Programme, which has supported up to 400 children through their parents and caregivers since 2016. Funded by the Ministry of Education, the 14-week programme is for families of children aged two to six with autism or autistic traits, and no formal diagnosis is required. Up to eight programmes a year now run, including in Whakatāne.

Nine sites have been selected for New Zealand's revised World Heritage Tentative List after a Department of Conservation review and an independent expert panel assessment. They include the Waitangi Treaty Grounds, Kate Sheppard House in Christchurch, Parihaka Papakāinga, Te Hauturu o Toi/Little Barrier Island, the Auckland Volcanic Field and the Kermadec Islands. DOC will submit the list to UNESCO, and nominators can now begin preparing dossiers for full World Heritage status.

The Department of Conservation and Ngāti Konohi are seeking public views for the 25-year review of Te Tapuwae o Rongokako Marine Reserve on the Tairāwhiti coast. Established in 1999 after a joint application, the reserve protects diverse marine habitats and species. A survey is open to anyone who uses or values the reserve, and the feedback will inform future management recommendations. Responses close on 19 October 2026.

Two youths have been arrested and charged over a serious assault of a minor in Invercargill's Queens Park last Friday. Charges include aggravated robbery, indecent assault, kidnapping and wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and one faces an additional theft charge. Police said the pair are not linked to earlier assaults in the city this year. They appeared in Invercargill Youth Court and are due back on 23 October.

Police ran checkpoints and prevention patrols during a shearing event in Alexandra on 2-3 October, breath testing about 800 drivers on Centennial Avenue on the Friday and around 300 vehicles on the Saturday. One driver returned a breath alcohol reading of 366mcg, and an under-20 driver recorded 66mcg. Two vehicles were impounded and several alcohol-related infringement notices were issued over the weekend.

Police say the death of 32-year-old Chantelle McLaughlin-Middlemiss at her Onetangi property on Waiheke Island on 2 June 2026 is suspicious, and believe a small number of people hold important information. Emergency services attended twice that afternoon, finding her alive at about 2.42pm before she was found unresponsive around 3.30pm. Construction has formally begun on the Waikare Gorge realignment of State Highway 2 between Wairoa and Napier, with Transport Minister Chris Bishop turning the first sod. The nearly 4km route includes a 260-metre single-span bridge about 65m above the river, replacing a gorge section prone to slips whose bridge was destroyed in Cyclone Gabrielle. The cost estimate has fallen from $350-425m to $275-325m, and the build is expected to take three to four years.

Aspeq Limited has been selected to design and deliver New Zealand's new in-person citizenship test, Internal Affairs Minister Brooke van Velden announced. The test will become part of the citizenship by grant process from late 2027, checking that applicants understand the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship. Aspeq will work with the Department of Internal Affairs on a managed service covering booking, payment and delivery of tests nationwide.

Twenty-two NGOs will receive support through the third round of the Mental Health and Addiction Community Sector Innovation Fund, Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey announced, taking the number of funded initiatives to 39. Recipients include the New Zealand Drug Foundation, which will expand SMART Recovery nationwide, plus Wellington City Mission, Auckland City Mission and Hanmer Springs Community Trust. New Zealand Police say the re-investigation phase of Operation Hark is nearing completion after 57 adult sexual assault and child protection files handled by a single officer were reopened. Two prosecutions have begun, extradition proceedings are being initiated in three matters, 43 matters have been filed without prosecution and nine remain unresolved. A separate systems review is expected to finish by late October, and Police will publish the final report.
