South Auckland woman Mele Terepo has been sentenced to 11 months' home detention in the Manukau District Court after pleading guilty to aiding and abetting tax evasion. Inland Revenue found that PAYE and withholding tax filed by her labour hire company, Wingshead Property Developments, fell more than $606,000 short between October 2020 and March 2023, with only 15 of 163 PAYE returns accurate.

The Ministry of Defence has issued a request for tender for a polar patrol uncrewed aerial system to expand naval patrol capability in the Southern Ocean and Antarctic waters. The system would include ground stations, three or more aircraft, training, spares and sensors, supporting search and rescue and maritime security missions from Royal New Zealand Navy vessels. The project was funded in Budget 26, and the tender closes on 8 November.

The Electricity Authority is consulting on a review of New Zealand's security of supply standards, set in 2012 and last reviewed in 2018, citing growth in wind, solar and grid-scale batteries and more uncertain demand forecasts. The proposals change how the standards are calculated and update the Security Standards Assumptions Document. Feedback closes on 17 November 2026, and the new standards are intended for the 2028 Security of Supply Assessment.

Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand is using drones to find the last isolated wilding pines around the Tekapo River, after years of control work significantly reduced large infestations. Drone imagery guides ground crews directly to scattered trees, which can still produce thousands of seeds. The work by Boffa Miskell and Trap & Trigger complements Environment Canterbury and National Wilding Conifer Control Programme efforts across the Mackenzie Basin.

Around 60 soldiers from the NZ Army's High Readiness Task Unit completed Exercise Alpha Dracula, five days of coastal training around Banks Peninsula based on a fictional counter-gunrunning scenario in a Pacific nation. The exercise used the Mobile Tactical Command System from the Network Enabled Army programme, letting commanders track teams and share orders remotely and securely. The Army aims to use the network with partners including Australia at Exercise Talisman Sabre 2027.

Waikato Hospital now prepares planned caesarean patients through its Day of Surgery Admission (DOSA) unit, with staggered arrivals and nurses trained to prepare people for surgery. Health New Zealand says the pathway, shaped by a survey of more than 100 former patients, reduces waiting and fasting before surgery. Anaesthetist Dr Caroline Ariaens said the approach improves comfort and could help staff care for more people as demand grows.

The Department of Conservation has launched the Smart Weed Alert Tool (SWAT), a free early-warning system for new and emerging weeds that automatically scans biodiversity data from multiple sources, including iNaturalist NZ observations. Users can set customised alerts for the places they care about. DOC Senior Science Advisor Kate McAlpine said New Zealand spends more than $1 billion a year on weed management, a cost set to grow as new weeds invade.

A recent Department of Conservation survey has confirmed the freshwater pest algae didymo in the Kaipo River in northwest Fiordland, a river notable for its pristine state. DOC and Southland Fish & Game are urging packrafters, trampers, hunters and anglers to Check, Clean, Dry their gear before entering Fiordland and when moving between catchments. Both agencies will keep monitoring Fiordland waterways for didymo and other freshwater pests.

Police say a body found in the water near Moutohorā Island, north of Whakatāne, by a member of the public has been confirmed as the 36-year-old woman who entered the Ōtara River mouth and Waioeka River mouth in Ōpotiki on Sunday. Police were called to the area about 1.15pm. The death will be referred to the Coroner, and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.

The search for 47-year-old Erika Rodrigues Coelho, reported missing on 20 September, has been paused by Police after extensive searching. Sixty-nine New Zealand Police recruits from Recruit Wing 400, whose patron is Joe Harawira, will graduate at Te Rauparaha Arena in Porirua on Thursday 8 October at 2pm. Police have arrested a 33-year-old man at a Gisborne address after two people entered the Ōtara River and Waioeka River mouth connection in Ōpotiki on Sunday, and are urgently appealing for information about the woman not yet located. Searches by water, helicopter, drone, dogs, LandSAR and Coastguard Ōpotiki continued, assisted by the Police National Dive Squad. The man was due in Gisborne District Court facing charges including dangerous driving.

Police have charged a 33-year-old woman with attempted murder after an incident on Kirby Street, Glendene, at about 11.40pm on Sunday. Three people were taken to hospital, two in a critical condition, after neighbours helped them before emergency services arrived. Police say all parties are known to each other and no one else is being sought, and the woman was due in the Waitākere District Court via a bedside hearing.

The Government has signed a City and Regional Deal with Queenstown Lakes District Council, Central Otago District Council and Otago Regional Council, setting up a 10-year partnership guided by a 30-year vision for the Otago Central Lakes region. Commitments span housing, transport, health, energy and economic development, including work on extra electricity transmission capacity. The Government is funding 12 new classrooms at Wakatipu High School in Queenstown to meet fast-growing demand for secondary education. The New Zealand School Property Agency will begin construction in the first half of 2027, with the classrooms opening by mid-2028. Funding has also been set aside to buy a site for a future Queenstown high school, and a pilot will enclose some open-plan classrooms at six PPP schools.

NZTA has released a 30-year Queenstown Strategic Network Plan setting out staged transport improvements as the peak-day population is forecast to grow from about 83,000 in 2025 to about 143,000 by 2055. Early priorities include the Frankton Flats intersection, bus priority, Ladies Mile and Southern Corridor upgrades and replacing Edith Cavell Bridge. Transport Minister Chris Bishop said the plan will feed into the 2027-30 National Land Transport Programme.

Southern Infrastructure Limited's proposed Queenstown Cable Car has reached an initial agreement with Private Capital Group for around $265 million in lending, drawing partly on capital invested through the Active Investor Plus visa. The line would link central Queenstown, Frankton, Queenstown Airport and Ladies Mile. Ministers said the visa has drawn 949 applications and more than $2.88 billion in committed capital since its April 2025 refresh.

The Piraunui Stream Bridge on State Highway 26 in Waikato will be replaced with $5 million from the Regional Infrastructure Fund, Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Transport Minister Chris Bishop announced. Parts of the bridge are almost a century old. Design and consenting work is expected to begin within six months, with construction anticipated from 2027, subject to approvals and property requirements.
