Another bridge on South Canterbury’s State Highway 82 will be replaced, through funding from the Regional Infrastructure Fund, Regional Development Minister Shane Jones and Transport Minister Chris Bishop say.

The Deep Creek Bridge on SH82 will be replaced at a cost of $7.5 million. Elephant Hill Stream Bridge has already been replaced, and Waihao North Bridge is in the process of being replaced

Deep Creek Bridge carries about 1850 vehicles each day and supports local journeys, agricultural activity and freight movements.

"South Canterbury communities rely on this route every day for work, business and access to services. Reliable transport infrastructure underpins agriculture, freight and regional business, and this investment will keep this important connection fit for purpose," Mr Jones says.

Mr Bishop says strong transport links are essential to support regional productivity and connectivity.

Significant deterioration, including major cracking in the pier, means replacement is a better option than continuing maintenance and repairs.

"Replacing Deep Creek Bridge provides better long-term value than continuing to pour money into increasingly costly repairs. It is a practical investment that will benefit road users and freight operators for decades to come," Mr Bishop says.

Design and consenting work is expected to begin within six months, with construction expected to commence in 2027.
