Governor Newsom proclaims Labor Day
SACRAMENTO – Governor Gavin Newsom today issued a proclamation declaring September 7, 2026, as “Labor Day.”

PROCLAMATION
On Labor Day, we honor the working people whose talent, determination, and sacrifice keep California moving forward. From the people who build our communities and care for our families to those who grow our food, educate our children, power our industries, and drive our innovation, California’s strength begins with its workers.
We honor the generations of workers and labor organizations whose efforts made work safer, fairer, and more dignified. In California, we understand that we are all different parts of one body, that our collective wellbeing depends on our shared success. Genuine prosperity can be achieved only when those who have powered the world’s fourth-largest economy can fully share in its rewards.
My administration has worked alongside labor to raise wages, expand paid leave, strengthen workplace protections, defend the right to organize and collectively bargain, and ensure workers receive the pay and protections they have earned.
At the same time, the state is opening more doors to opportunity by investing in career education through our Master Plan for Career Education, which prioritizes hands-on learning for students and workers and strengthens pathways to high-paying, fulfilling careers, including those that do not require a college degree.
As technology reshapes our economy, California is preparing workers for what comes next — supporting innovation that creates opportunity, strengthens our workforce, and delivers benefits that extend beyond the boardroom and C-Suite.
This Labor Day, we celebrate the workers who built California and recommit ourselves to the workers building our future. We will continue to stand with working people, protect their rights, expand pathways to prosperity, and build an economy where hard work is met with real opportunity.
NOW THEREFORE I, GAVIN NEWSOM, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim September 7, 2026, as “Labor Day.”
