Automate your most repetitive tasks with tailored instructions through skills, which will be replacing Gems.
With skills, you can save your most-used instructions once and run them endlessly — so you can skip the repetitive prompting and jump straight to the results. Skills are already available in Gemini Spark, and they will soon replace Gems as the tool for tailoring instructions for specific tasks.
Today, we’re rolling out skills directly into Gemini chat globally, and bringing this functionality to Google Workspace business, enterprise, nonprofit, and education customers in the coming weeks.
Save time with reusable instructions
Once you create a skill, you can easily use it again just by typing a forward slash ‘/’ and the skill’s name directly in the prompt bar.
Here are a few ways skills can help you work more efficiently:
- Prepare for presentations: Build a custom skill to outline slides, craft talking points, and prep for tough Q&As, whether for a class presentation or a project pitch.
- Match your writing style: Gemini knows your unique writing style across Workspace apps to speed up drafting, all while keeping you in full control.
- Get more perspectives: Ask Gemini to always provide three to five distinct viewpoints on a topic to help you brainstorm ideas, refine arguments, or commit to a decision.
Gemini can help you build custom skills from your chats and automatically run them whenever you enter a matching prompt. For bigger tasks, you can stack multiple skills together at the same time — like combining a writing style skill with a brand guidelines skill to create on-brand assets in your voice. Plus, starting today, you can create skills that include reference files like plain text documents, PDFs, or images.
Transition from Gems
In the coming weeks, skills will have the features you loved in Gems, including the ability to share them with others and add files from Google Drive and notebooks from Gemini Notebook. As we bring more functionality to skills, we will remove support for Gems starting in November for individuals with personal accounts, March 2027 for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit customers, and June 2027 for Workspace education customers. As part of this change, Opal, our experiment for building mini apps will also turn down at the same time in November.
