Preliminary Magnitude 4.8 Earthquake recorded near Melbourne, Victoria
Geoscience Australia’s National Earthquake Alerts Centre recorded a preliminary magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Leongatha, south-east of Melbourne, at 2:01 am AEST on Saturday 3 October 2026. A magnitude 3.1 aftershock followed shortly afterwards. The agency is directing the public to Earthquakes@GA for updates and felt reports, and has issued media materials for outlets covering the Victorian event.
